The NTIS Centre has been a research and development centre of the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen since 2015.
The NTIS research team focuses on interdisciplinary research and development (R&D), which combines selected technical and natural science fields. Its activities are focused on R&D in the areas of cybernetics, robotics and mechanical systems, information and bioengineering technologies, new thin-film materials, geospatial data processing methods and mathematical modelling of systems and processes.
The centre is located in a modern building which had been constructed in 2011-2014 with the support of European development funds. Its laboratories with a total area of 12 thousand m2 are equipped with modern instruments and technologies for research and development. The centre, with an annual budget of CZK 230 mil., employs approximately 190 researchers (as of 2024). The main sources of its annual budget come from subsidies for targeted R&D projects of domestic and foreign providers, institutional support from the state budget of the Czech Republic, revenues from contract research and transfer of R&D results to an application sphere, and from other activities.
The R&D results of the centre include application results such as technologies, software, or methodologies, with selected results being protected by patents. Publication results of the centre are also significant, contributing to the knowledge in selected scientific fields such as mathematics, physics, geomatics, informatics, mechanics, and cybernetics. R&D results of the centre have been used by partners in the application sphere, both in industry, public administration and elsewhere.
To ensure top-notch research at the centre, its R&D activities are intricately linked to educational activities of the Faculty of Applied Sciences. The faculty's educational infrastructure had been also significantly modernized in 2011-2014 thanks to the support of another large project co-financed by European development funds. With its financial support, new classrooms and laboratories were built for educating students in all study programs of the faculty. The NTIS centre enables students to participate in its R&D activities. The centre also offers job opportunities for talented graduates of the faculty's study programs.
History of the project NTIS
The Centre came into existence mainly thanks to funding from the European Regional Development Fund, from the Operational Programme Research and Development for Innovation, Priority Axis 1: European Centres of Excellence. The NTIS Research Centre, which is so far the largest investment in the history of the University of West Bohemia, is the only research centre of its kind in western Bohemia and one of eight centres of excellence in the Czech Republic.
A new building was constructed for use by NTIS, housing offices and laboratories with a total area of 12 thousand sq. meters. 800 thousand EUR-worth of state-of-the-art equipment and technologies were commissioned by NTIS, and the number of employees is growing to 180 by 2015.
Top research must always be coupled with education. The Faculty of Applied Sciences has been successful in securing another European project to commission new lecture rooms and laboratories for use by students. That project aimed at improving the quality and increasing the numbers of graduates choosing to continue their careers in research and development.
The Research Institute of Geodesy, Topography and Cartography also participated in the Project.
